Why we built this

Pender is home. Not a postcode, not a place I pass through, but the place I think of when someone says the word. The ferry pulling into Otter Bay. The Saturday market in summer. The way people slow down for deer on the road and wave at every car whether they know it or not. It is a small island with a big heart, and I have never wanted to live anywhere else.

For years, if you wanted to sell a kayak, find a room to rent, give away a wood stove or look for someone to fix a fence, you did it through a mix of bulletin boards, big city websites that do not know where Pender is, and Facebook groups where the post you needed was buried by lunchtime. It worked, sort of. It never felt like it was ours.

A nod to Salt Spring

The best example of what a small island can do for itself is next door. The Salt Spring Exchange has been the heartbeat of Salt Spring for years. It is where people there find housing, sell what they no longer need, hire local help and keep up with what is going on. We love what they have built. It proves that a marketplace made for one island, by people who live on it, can be better than anything a big company will ever offer us.

We wanted that for Pender. Not a copy, but our own version, built around North and South Pender, our categories, our businesses and the way islanders actually trade with each other. That is what Pender Exchange is.

What we are trying to be

A place where posting is free for islanders, where you can find what you need in a minute, and where the person on the other end of a listing is a neighbour, not a stranger. Somewhere to look for a rental before you ask around at the Driftwood. Somewhere to give things a second life instead of taking them to the dump. Somewhere to find out about the fundraiser, the concert, the lost dog.

We moderate carefully, we keep your contact details private until you choose to share them, and we do not sell your information to anyone. Those are promises, not features.

This only works because of local businesses

Here is the honest part. A website like this costs real money to run every month, and posting will always be free for islanders. The only way to make those two things true at the same time is advertising from local businesses. Every sponsor card you see on this site is a business that decided to help keep it running for everyone else.

So to every business that has put an ad here, especially the ones who signed on before we could show them a single number: thank you. You are not just advertising. You are paying the ferry fare for the whole island to have a marketplace of its own. Please support them back.
